Mott Magic Shines Again as Mustangs Complete Reverse Sweep Over Saint Mary’s

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The magic was back in Mott Athletics Center Friday night as the Cal Poly volleyball team came back from a 2-0 set deficit to win the next three and complete the reverse sweep over Saint Mary's 3-2 during the second day of the Mustang Invitational.
It was the third straight match the Mustangs have gone to five sets, going 2-1 in that stretch.
For the second straight night, redshirt sophomore Lizzy Markovska got herself a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs. Redshirt junior outside hitter Tommi Stockham also finished with 13 kills in addition to five digs and four blocks. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Annabelle Thalken added nine kills and three digs.
Defensively, junior libero Jolei Akima was once again above 20 digs, collecting a match-high 24. At the net, the Mustangs (6-5) had 13 blocks as a team and were led by six from Amy Hiatt and five from Kate Slack.
After just missing out on winning the first two sets, falling by close scores of 25-23, 25-22 to the Gaels (6-5), the Mustangs turned things around starting in the third. Tied 9-9 in the third, Cal Poly exploded with a 9-3 run to go ahead 18-12. They later went up by as much as seven before going on to win it 25-17 thanks in part to the Mustangs hitting .370 for the set while limiting Saint Mary's to a flat .000 percentage.
The Mustangs got out to a blazing start in the fourth, going ahead 14-5. They never looked back from there as the Gaels were only able to get within seven before Cal Poly went on to win it comfortably 25-17.
In the fifth, Cal Poly took an 8-5 lead to the turn. Saint Mary's rallied to tie it at 8-8 after three straight points. The Mustangs then followed that up with four unanswered points to take a 12-8 lead. The Gaels got back within three before the Mustangs sealed the comeback victory, winning it 15-10.
Cal Poly will finish up the Mustang Invitational Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against Pepperdine, a team the Mustangs lost to in five sets last year.
