SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — A 71st-minute penalty kick goal by Jessie Halladay powered White to a 1-0 victory over Green in the annual intrasquad scrimmage for the Cal Poly women's soccer program on Saturday night.
The Mustangs' roster was split in half to create the Green and White teams for the scrimmage, and the squads played a tightly-contested match throughout with each side registering 10 shots.
Just three minutes into the match, junior Peja Balanon forced redshirt freshman goalkeeper Riley Wilkerson, a 2022 San Luis Obispo High grad, to make a save for the White team.
In the 18th minute, the White team generated the best scoring opportunity in the opening half. Halladay fed a pass to redshirt sophomore Maille Smith in front of the net, but Mackenzie Samuel, the 2022 Big West Goalkeeper of the Year, stepped out and made a huge save for Green to keep the match scoreless.
Smith and freshman Kasia Wolf registered shots on goal for White and graduate transfer Whitney Wiley blasted one on frame for Green in the final 20 minutes of the first half, but the two sides went into the break tied at 0-0.
The White team increased the pressure at the start of the second half, firing four shots in the first 20 minutes. Senior Olivia Ortiz blasted back-to-back shots on goal for the Green team from outside the box in the 69th and 70th minute, and then Halladay struck in the 71st minute for White. The sophomore transfer from Loyola Marymount drew a foul in the box and stepped up and buried the penalty kick with ease to score the lone goal of the scrimmage.
Samuel made six saves for Green and Wilkerson recorded five for White.
Cal Poly returns to action at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by Dignity Health French Hospital Medical Center next Saturday at 6 p.m. to host its first exhibition match of the preseason against San Jose State. Cal Poly opens its 2023 regular season on Thursday, Aug. 17, at Fresno State.
