SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After nine days of training camp, the Cal Poly women's soccer program will finally get its first taste of another team this fall when the Mustangs play host to San Jose State on Saturday for a 6 p.m. exhibition match.
Admission to the match at Mustang Memorial Field Presented by French Hospital is free.
The Mustangs, who opened their preseason training camp on Aug. 1, are nearly a week removed from hosting their annual Green vs. White intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday, Aug. 5. Jessie Halladay, a sophomore transfer from Loyola Marymount, scored the lone goal in the scrimmage, burying a penalty kick in the 71st minute to power the White team to a 1-0 victory over Green.
Cal Poly, who returns 15 letterwinners and four All-Big West honorees from their 2022 squad that secured the program's first outright Big West regular season title in nine years, faced the Spartans in preseason action last year as well, earning a 1-1 exhibition draw in San Jose. The last regular season meeting between the two sides occurred on Sept. 12, 2021, when Cal Poly dominated San Jose State 5-0 at Mustang Memorial Field.
In 2022, the Spartans won the Mountain West regular season title and the Mountain West Championship to qualify for the NCAA Tournament, where they fell to third-seeded Stanford 6-0 in the first round. San Jose State was picked to finish fourth in this year's Mountain West Preseason Women's Soccer Coaches Poll.
Saturday's exhibition is the Mustangs' final tuneup before opening the 2023 regular season at Fresno State on Thursday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. Cal Poly will host its final exhibition match at noon on Sunday, Aug. 20, when they take on Cal State Monterey Bay.
