SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Former Cal Poly women's soccer star midfielder Camille Lafaix signed a professional contract with FC Girondins de Bordeaux in France on Friday to play for the club during the upcoming 2023-24 season.
Girondins de Bordeaux plays in Division 1 Féminine or D1 Arkema, the highest division of women's soccer in France.
The 22-year-old, born in Los Gatos, Calif., is extremely grateful for the opportunity and looks forward to getting to work right away ahead of the club's season opener on Sept. 16 against Paris Saint-Germain.
"I am so excited to play for such a great club and hopefully contribute this season," Lafaix said.
Getting a chance to play professionally for a team in France means a lot to Lafaix as her entire extended family lives there. In fact, Lafaix is the first member of her family to be born in the U.S.
Lafaix, a two-time All-Big West First Team selection, capped off an incredible career at Cal Poly last fall, helping the program capture its first outright Big West regular season title since 2013 and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. As a team captain in 2022, she led the team in points (11), goals (five) and game-winning goals (three) and was crowned Big West Midfielder of the Year for the second straight season, becoming the first athlete in conference history to receive the award in back-to-back years.
Lafaix's efforts last fall also earned her a second straight United Soccer Coaches All-West Region First Team selection, allowing her to become the third player in program history to secure multiple All-West Region First Team selections.
Lafaix, the 2022-23 Cal Poly Female Athlete of the Year, ranks 15th all-time in career points with 42 and prior to the start of the 2022 season became the first player in program history to be named to the Presseason MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, which is awarded annually to the National Player of the Year. Off the pitch, Lafaix garnered a United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America Second Team selection last fall for her dedication in the classroom, becoming the fourth player in program history to receive the honor.
Lafaix is the fifth Cal Poly women's soccer player to sign a contract to play professionally, joining Elise Krieghoff, Alyssa Giannetti, Becky Clark and Gina Oceguera-Eagleson.
