Mustangs Take Down Nevada in Four Sets Saturday

SACRAMENTO — Career-highs were set by multiple Cal Poly volleyball players Saturday as the Mustangs took down Nevada 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-13) to earn their first victory of the season in their second match at the Sacramento State Invitational.Lizzy Markovska led Cal Poly (1-1) offensively with a career-high 17 kills to go along with eight digs and two blocks. She had eight kills in the first set alone.
Junior libero Jolei Akima was everywhere in the back row for the Mustangs defensively, recording a career-high 25 digs and chipped in two aces. Redshirt junior outside hitter Tommi Stockham nearly had herself a double-double, finishing with nine kills, 12 digs, and three aces. Four other Mustangs had at least four kills, including freshman Katie Clevenger adding four in just her second career collegiate match.
Cal Poly ran a 6-2 system with both redshirt sophomore Emme Bullis and freshman Samantha Callahan splitting setting duties. Bullis finished with 27 assists while Callahan had 18. Callahan, as well as fellow freshmen Clevenger and Emma Fredrick all made their first career starts Saturday.
The Mustangs were effective from behind the service line, recording nine aces as a team. Defensively, they held the Wolfpack (0-2) to just a .084 hitting percentage.
Neither team led by more than three points in the first set until tied at 13, Nevada scored four unanswered points to go up 17-13. Trailing 19-15, the Mustangs rattled off six straight points to regain the lead at 21-19. Nevada eventually tied it at 21 and then 23 apiece before the Wolfpack scored back-to-back points to win the first set 25-23.
Cal Poly got back on track in the second set. After trailing 15-13, the Mustangs went on a 9-2 run to gain a 22-17 lead. Up 24-19, Cal Poly freshman Ella Scott capped off the set with an ace to win it, one of five aces the Mustangs had in the second.
The Mustangs started fast out of the gates in the third, getting out to a 7-3 lead. The Wolfpack eventually came back to take a 10-8 lead. Cal Poly used a 5-0 run to go up 18-15 later in the set before Nevada tied it at 20 apiece. Tied at 23, a kill by Markovska followed by a block by Amy Hiatt and Annabelle Thalken won the set for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly shut the door in the fourth, this time getting out to a 7-2 lead. Up 7-4, the Mustangs scored five straight to take an eight-point lead. They never looked back from there, going on to win it 25-13 to clinch the match victory.
Cal Poly wraps up the Sacramento State Invitational Sunday when taking on the host Hornets at 1:30 p.m. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+.
