SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly volleyball begins its 2023 season Friday on the road in Sacramento when taking on the University of Iowa as part of the Sacramento State Invitational. First serve against the Hawkeyes is set for 4:30 p.m. from inside The Nest on the campus of Sacramento State. Fans can follow the match live on ESPN+ and via live stats. As part of the Sacramento State Invitational, the Mustangs will face Nevada on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. and the host Hornets on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Both of those matches will also be streamed live on ESPN+ (subscription required). Cal Poly Outlook - Head coach Caroline Walters, heading into her fourth season at the helm and 15th overall with the program, leads a group that includes 14 returners and seven players who played in at least 50 sets last season. - Among the returners include three who earned All-Big West honors last season – outside hitter Tommi Stockham, setter Emme Bullis, and outside hitter Lizzy Markovska. Stockham was named First Team All-Big West for a second straight season after leading the team and being second in the Big West in kills at 3.79 per set. - Cal Poly sports a fairly young roster this season as 14 of the 20 players are athletically freshmen or sophomores. The Mustangs do not have a senior on the team as all six others are juniors. There are six newcomers, five freshmen and one Division I transfer, and four players who redshirted last year who will be activated this season (Marina Warren, Tess Masingale, Annabelle Thalken, and Kelly Schackel). - The Mustangs are coming off a 17-13 overall record last season. They finished tied for third in the Big West standings at 14-6, marking the seventh straight year finishing in the top three of the Big West. Scouting Iowa - The Hawkeyes are coming a 10-21 record in 2022. - This will be the Mustangs' fourth all-time meeting with Iowa, with the last happening during the 1994 season. Cal Poly has won two of the first three meetings. Scouting Nevada - The Wolfpack were 14-15 overall last season. - They feature 11 returners and six freshmen on this year's team. - Cal Poly is 9-5 all-time against Nevada, with the last meeting being back in 2016. Scouting Sacramento State - The Hornets were 15-15 overall last season and 10-6 in Big Sky play. - They return 13 players from last season, including their entire starting lineup. - Cal Poly is 11-6 all-time against the Hornets, the last meeting was during the 2016 season.
