Mustangs Fall to Iowa in Season Opener, 3-1
8/25/2023 7:33:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SACRAMENTO — Redshirt junior outside hitter Tommi Stockham picked up right where she left off last season, recording a match-high 15 kills to go along with seven digs, but Cal Poly volleyball came up short in its season opener Friday as the Mustangs fell to Iowa 3-1 (25-16, 25-23, 25-27, 25-12) at the Sacramento State Invitational.
Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Lizzy Markovska nearly recorded a double-double as she finished with nine kills and 11 digs. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Annabelle Thalken, who made her return to the court after missing all last season with an injury, made a splash with seven kills and four blocks. Defensively in the back row, junior libero Jolei Akima finished with 19 digs to lead all players.
The Hawkeyes had two players who finished with double digit kills as Iowa was strong from the service line with eight aces. Service errors hurt Cal Poly as the Mustangs, who played three true freshman in the match in Samantha Callahan, Emma Fredrick, and Katie Clevenger, finished with 15 of them for the match.
The first set was tight until Iowa was able to pull away at the end, finishing on a 6-0 run to win the set 25-16.
Cal Poly took an 11-7 lead in the second set after scoring six straight points. Iowa was able to come back and eventually take the lead back 14-13. With Iowa leading 20-19, the Hawkeyes scored four straight to hold set point at 24-19. However, the Mustangs didn't go down without a fight as they fought off four set points to cut the lead down to 24-23. However, a kill by the Hawkeyes on the next point won them the set 25-23.
Despite getting down 7-3 to begin the third, the Mustangs were able to claw their way back and take a 18-18 lead later in the set. Tied at 22, Iowa scored back-to-back points to hold match point before the Mustangs scored two in a row to tie it back up at 24. After trading points to tie it at 25, Cal Poly, capped off by a Markovska kill, scored consecutive points to win the set 27-25.
Iowa however got out to an 8-3 lead to begin the fourth. Cal Poly got it back within three at 9-6 but were not able to get any closer as the Hawkeyes eventually went on to win the set 25-12 to seal the victory.
The Mustangs will be back in action at the Sacramento State Invitational Saturday at 4:30 p.m. as they take on Nevada. The match will be live streamed on ESPN+.
