Mustangs Sweep Hornets to Win Sac State Invitational

SACRAMENTO — Behind double-digit kill performances by both redshirt sophomore outside hitter Lizzy Markovska and redshirt junior outside hitter Tommi Stockham, Cal Poly volleyball swept Sacramento State Sunday 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-19) to finish the opening weekend of the season 2-1 and win the Sacramento State Invitational.
Markovska, who was named Tournament MVP, finished with a match-high 14 kills to go along with eight digs and three blocks. For the weekend, she had a total of 40 kills and 27 digs.
Stockham recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 kills and 12 digs on the afternoon. She was named to the All-Tournament Team after posting 35 kills and 37 digs for the weekend in addition to five aces.
Redshirt junior middle blocker Kate Slack was a force at the net defensively for the Mustangs (2-1). She matched her career-high with seven blocks in addition to notching six kills. As a team, Cal Poly had nine blocks and held the Hornets (2-1) to a .123 hitting percentage.
Junior libero Jolei Akima, who was also named to the All-Tournament Team, had 10 digs on the afternoon. She led Cal Poly in digs for the weekend with 55, averaging 5.00 digs per set.
The first set swung when Cal Poly, leading 13-12, scored three consecutive points to take a four-point lead which matched its largest of the set. Sacramento State was able to cut the lead down to one at 21-20 before the Mustangs finished the set on a 4-1 run to win it 25-21.
Tied 5-5 in the second set, the Hornets took an 11-6 lead after a 6-1 run. The Mustangs then scored four straight points to get back within one. It was back-and-forth from there until Cal Poly, trailing 22-20, finished the set on a 5-1 run to come back and win it 25-23.
The Mustangs came out of the gate firing on all cylinders in the third, getting out to an 11-4 lead. Sacramento State got as close as three, the last time being at 16-13, before Cal Poly rattled off five consecutive points to stretch the lead to eight and going on to win 25-16 to clinch the sweep.
The Mustangs continue their nine-match road stretch to begin the season next week when they travel to Nacogdoches, Texas for the Stephen F. Austin Tournament. There, Cal Poly will face Stephen F. Austin on Thursday, August 31 at 4 p.m. PT. They will also take on Southern Mississippi on Friday at 4 p.m. PT and Nicholls State Saturday at 9 a.m. PT.
