Mustangs Fall in Three at Stephen F. Austin Thursday

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Annabelle Thalken set a career-high in kills while junior middle blocker Amy Hiatt set a career-high in blocks and redshirt junior outside hitter Tommi Stockham recorded a career-high in aces, but the Cal Poly volleyball team fell on the road to Stephen F. Austin Thursday, 3-0 (26-24, 28-26, 25-18).
Thalken led the Mustangs (2-2) in kills for the match with a career-high nine. Hiatt finished with a career-high seven blocks, three of them solo. Stockham was a weapon from behind the service line, finishing with a career-high four aces. Hiatt finished with a career-high seven blocks, three of them solo.
While the Mustangs were strong defensively at the net with 11 blocks as a team, Cal Poly had a tough night offensively as the Ladyjacks (3-1) limited them to a .086 hitting percentage for the match.
There will little differences between the two teams in the first two sets as both required extra time and were decided by two points. Both teams' stats lines were nearly identical in both the first and second sets as both teams hit negative in the first set nearly the same percentage in the second set.
In the first set, Cal Poly was able to climb back from an early seven-point deficit at 12-5 to eventually tie it at 14 and later take its first lead at 16-15. Tied at 21 later in the set, Stephen F. Austin went on a 3-1 run to hold set point at 24-22. The Mustangs showed impressive resolve, erasing two set points to tie it at 24. However, the Ladyjacks then scored back-to-back points to win it 26-24.
Stephen F. Austin got out to another big lead to start the second, 7-2, before Cal Poly bounced back with a 9-3 run to take its first lead at 11-10. Tied at 12, the Ladyjacks took a 17-13 advantage after going on a 5-2 run. The Mustangs were able to eventually bounce back and get it tied at 20 apiece. For the second straight set, Cal Poly showed no quit after Stephen F. Austin held set point at 24-22, scoring three straight points to take a 25-24 lead. The teams traded points from there before tied at 26, the Ladyjacks put away back-to-back points to win it 28-26.
In the third, Stephen F. Austin got out to a 9-3 lead and later as much as nine at 15-6. The Mustangs were able to score four straight points and get it back to within five. However, that's as close as it got as the Ladyjacks went on to win the set 25-18.
Cal Poly will look to rebound Friday at the Stephen F. Austin Tournament as the Mustangs will face Southern Mississippi at 4 p.m. PT in Nacogdoches.
