EUGENE, Ore. — On Saturday, Rory Devaney capped off an historic showing at the USATF U20 Championships by earning yet another podium finish — this time in the men's discus.
The San Luis Obispo native captured third in the discus, tossing a 1.75 kilogram personal best of 186 feet, 6 inches on his second attempt to secure bronze medalist honors. The performance came a day after Devaney placed second in the men's hammer at the meet, tossing a 6-kilogram personal best of 218 feet, 11 inches on his sixth and final throw.
In May, Devaney took home fifth in the men's discus at the Big West Championships and he is currently No. 5 all-time in Cal Poly history in the event (176-8).
This spring as a freshman, the 2022 San Luis Obispo High grad became Cal Poly's first NCAA West Preliminaries qualifier in the men's hammer throw, shattering Tom Pagani's 62-year-old school record in the event at the West Coast Relays on March 30, recording a PR of 202-4 in his fourth ever meet throwing the hammer.
Devaney, the first Cal Poly athlete in four years to compete at the USATF U20 Championships, placed third in the hammer at this year's conference championships to earn All-Big West honors.
