SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Four Cal Poly track and field student-athletes along with both the men's and women's teams have been honored by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for their dedication and success in the classroom.
Mathis Bresko, Rory Devaney, Lexi Evans and Rachel Victor were all named All-Academic Athletes by the USTFCCCA, while the Cal Poly men's and women's teams both received All-Academic Team honors.
To earn All-Academic Team status, programs must post a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Mustang women recorded a team GPA of 3.295 while the men had a team GPA of 3.158.
For individuals to secure All-Academic Athlete praise, student-athletes must meet several criteria, including maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and participating in any round of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Bresko, who graduated from Cal Poly this spring with his bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering, captured his second straight Big West title in the men's pole vault this season, clearing a lifetime best of 18 feet, 1 inch at the conference meet to move to No. 4 on Cal Poly's all-time list. He went on to place 19th overall at the NCAA West Preliminaries in his second consecutive appearance at the meet. Bresko was also named Cal Poly's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and garnered Big West Spring All-Academic honors.
Devaney, a forest and fire sciences major, recently capped off an incredible first year with the Mustangs by medaling in two events at the USATF U20 Championships in Eugene on July 6-9, placing second in the men's hammer and third in the discus. As a true freshman, Devaney qualified for the NCAA West Prelims by shattering Tom Pagani's 62-year-old school record in the hammer at the West Coast Relays. He captured third in the event at the Big West Championships. The San Luis Obispo native also is currently No. 5 on Cal Poly's all-time list in the discus and took fifth in the event at conference.
Evans, an aerospace engineering major, had a sensational freshman campaign as well. She cleared a collegiate best of 13 feet, 3.75 inches in the women's pole vault at the Conover Classic, good for No. 5 on Cal Poly's top marks list, to qualify for the NCAA West Prelims for the first time, where she finished 30th. She placed second at the Big West Championships and is also fourth on the school's all-time list in the pole vault indoors.
Victor, a graduate transfer from Sacramento State, made the most of her one season with the Mustangs. She earned her first trip to the West Prelims by running the second-fastest women's 3,000-meter steeplechase time (10:16.43) at the Steve Scott Invitational, just a half of a second off the school record. She captured a runner-up finish at the Big West Championships and placed 38th overall at the West Prelims. Victor received College Sports Communicators Academic All-District and All-Big West Academic honors as well. She is currently pursuing her master's degree in nutrition.
