11 Mustang Tennis Players Named ITA Scholar-Athletes

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly's tennis student-athletes continue to be high performers in the classroom as a total 11 players, six from the women's team and five from the men's team, were named 2023 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athletes while both programs also were named ITA All-Academic Teams.
For programs to receive the ITA All-Academic Team Award, a team must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher for the academic year. To earn ITA Scholar-Athlete honors, a student-athlete had to have a gpa of 3.5 or higher during the academic year.
The five men's players who earned ITA Scholar-Athlete status are Noah Berry, Joe Leather, Colter Smith, Basitaan Weststrate, and Fernando Fonseca.
It marks the fourth time that Fonseca has been named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, the third time for Smith, and the second time for Berry and Leather. All five were named to the Big West Spring All-Academic Team last month.
The six players on the women's side that received ITA Scholar-Athlete praise were Kim Bhunu, Kennedy Buntrock, Delanie Dunkle, Melissa LaMette, Sarah MacCallum and Alexandra Ozerets.
This is the fourth straight year Bhunu has been named an ITA Scholar-Athlete and the third consecutive time Dunkle and LaMette have earned the honor. All three were also selected to this year's Big West Spring All-Academic Team.
For Buntrock, MacCallum and Ozerets, this is their first time receiving the recognition. The trio played a pivotal role in the Mustangs' success on the court this spring as freshmen.
The Cal Poly women's team was named an ITA All-Academic Team for an impressive eighth consecutive year while it marked the fifth straight year for the men's team.
