FULLERTON, Calif. — Sophomore Maya Holman moved to No. 9 all-time in the heptathlon as Cal Poly track and field wrapped up the Big West Multi-Event Championships on Saturday at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Track Complex.
The lifetime-best heptathlon performance allowed Holman to place fifth (4,928 points) and score 4 team points for the Mustangs.
On the second day of the heptathlon, Holman showed out in the final three events to climb the standings when it mattered most. The Vacaville, Calif. started the day by recording heptathlon bests in the long jump (18 feet, 7 inches) and javelin (136 feet, 7 inches). The marks helped her capture second in the javelin and third in the long jump.
Holman finished strong by running a season best in the 800-meter (2:42.61). This is the second straight year Holman has scored team points for Cal Poly in the heptathlon after placing sixth at last year's Big West Championships as a true freshman.
Holman improved upon her previous best point total by 81 to pass Karen Kraemer (1984) on Cal Poly's all-time list.
Junior Nick Gammal gave it his all in the decathlon Saturday after rolling his ankle prior to the third event of the day. He battled through the adversity and was able to earn a seventh-place finish in the decathlon (5,203 points) for the second consecutive year to score 2 team points for the Mustangs.
Gammal grabbed third in the javelin (165-0) and fourth in the discus (120-6) Saturday. During the opening day Friday, Gammal posted collegiate bests in the 100 and long jump.
The remainder of the Big West Championship meet will be held on Friday, May 12, and Saturday, May 13, at the Titan Track Complex. Thanks to the performances of Holman and Gammal in the multis, Cal Poly currently sits in fourth place in the men's and women's standings.
