LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Aidan McCarthy (pictured above) smashed the school record in the men's 1,500-meter, Spencer Pickren and Xian Shively both recorded top-10 marks and six others ran personal bests for Cal Poly track and field at the Oxy Invitational on Saturday night.
The Mustangs sent 11 men's distance runners to the meet and they tore up the track in the 1,500-meter as eight posted personal bests in the event.
McCarthy stole the spotlight again, breaking his third school record of the season by running a blistering time of 3:39.56 to win the 1,500. The performance allowed him to surpass Dan Aldridge's 1978 school record (3:40.67). Currently, the time is No. 28 in Division I this season.
Earlier this season at the Bryan Clay Invitational, McCarthy obliterated a 53-year-old program record in the 800 (1:47.24) — a time that is tied for No. 11 in Division I. The redshirt sophomore became the first person in program history to run a sub-four minute mile during this indoor season.
McCarthy, the defending Big West champion in the 800, is the conference leader in the 800 and 1,500.
Pickren shot up to No. 5 all-time in school history in the 1,500 with a lifetime best of 3:43.29 to place second at the meet. Shively moved up to No. 7 all-time, capturing third with a 3:43.47.
Freshman Carson Smith (3:45.25), senior Anthony Benitez (3:47.83), freshman Lewis Westwood (3:49.15), and juniors Lucas Lacambra (3:49.59) and Rory Smail (3:49.70) also ran personal bests to cap an incredible showing for the Mustangs in the 1,500.
In the men's 3,000 steeplechase, Euan Houston ran a 22-second personal best of 9:15.25.
This was the final regular season meet for the Mustangs as the team competes in the Big West Championships on Friday, May 12, and Saturday, May 13, at the Titan Track Complex.
