BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Cal Poly beach volleyball enjoyed a pair of strong performances Saturday in Bakersfield, beating Pacific, 5-0, and CSU Bakersfield, 4-1.Piper Ferch and freshman Izzy Martinez winning 21-14, 21-11. Cal Poly then squared off against the host Roadrunners looking for some payback for what happened a few weeks ago. At the No. 1 spot, Ferch and Martinez won 21-15, 21-14 to move to 13-11 on the season. They are also 7-3 over their last 10 matches.
Lombard and Naess picked up a 21-19, 21-18 victory at the No. 2 spot to push their record to a team-leading 14-10 and also make them 7-3 in the last 10 matches.
Peranich and Golik also were victorious against CSU Bakersfield at the No. 3 spot, winning 22-20, 21-10 to push their record up to 12-8. Cal Poly's fourth point came from the No. 4 pair of freshman Emma Zuffelato and senior Kalee Graff, who won their match 21-16, 21-14.
Up next for the Mustangs, they will host their final home event of the season April 14-15 with the annual Center of Effort Challenge, one of the premier college beach volleyball events in the country that will see seven of the top teams in the country come to Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex for a two day tournament.
This year, the Center of Effort Challenge features No. 1 TCU, No. 2 USC, No. 3 Florida State, No. 4 UCLA, No. 7 LMU, No. 12 Long Beach State, and No. 18 Pepperdine. The Mustangs will face No. 1 TCU in their first match of the tournament Friday, April 14 at 1:45 p.m.
The Mustangs (11-19) won all of their matches on the day in straight sets. Cal Poly was able to get revenge over the Roadrunners (14-7) who beat the Mustangs a few weeks ago in San Luis Obispo 3-2.
Against Pacific in the first match of the day, the Tigers (0-16) were forced to forfeit at the No. 5 spot as they did not have enough players to field a pair there. At the other four courts, it was the No. 1 duo of sophomore
