Cal Poly Falls to No. 9 Cal, No. 13 Washington at Final Day of Mustang Invitational

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Playing two teams who are both ranked in the top-13 of the AVCA Top 20, Cal Poly beach volleyball dropped both of its final two matches of the Mustang Invitational Sunday at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex. The Mustangs lost to No. 13 Washington, 4-1, and No. 9 Cal, 5-0.
Against the No. 13 Huskies, Cal Poly's No. 2 pair of senior Jayelin Lombard and junior Piper Naess picked up a 21-19, 21-12 victory. They are now a team-leading 12-10 together this season. However, Washington won at the four other spots in the lineup to win the dual.
Later against No. 9 Cal, who went 4-0 at the Mustang Invitational, the Mustangs were close in several of the games, with two of the matches going three sets. Cal Poly's No. 4 pairing of senior Kalee Graff and freshman Emma Zuffelato took the first game against the Golden Bears' pairing but lost the second game and a close third set 15-13.
The Mustangs' No. 1 tandem of freshman Izzy Martinez and sophomore Piper Ferch were also just points away from winning their match. They also won their first set 21-19, dropped a close second set 19-21 and a back-and-forth third set 16-14.
Cal Poly finished the Mustang Invitational 2-2 after beating both UC Davis and No. 20 Tulane on Saturday. Lombard and Naess led the Mustangs for the weekend with a 3-1 record.
The Mustangs will head to Bakersfield Saturday, April 8for matches against CSU Bakersfield and Pacific at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
