BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Left fielder Collin Villegas doubled a school-record four times, third baseman Ryan Fenn drove in three runs and shortstop Aaron Casillas produced three hits as Cal Poly opened its Big West baseball series at CSU Bakersfield with a 12-4 victory Friday night.
Fifteen Mustangs have doubled three times in a single game, but Villegas is the first to do it four times, driving in one run at Hardt Field.
Designated hitter Taison Corio drew four walks, accomplished nine other times in a single season. Villegas opened the season with five walks against Missouri State, tying the mark set by Bradlee Beesley against Santa Clara in 2017.
With just its second win on the road this season, Cal Poly improved to 11-19 for the year and 7-6 in Big West games, alone in sixth place. CSU Bakersfield fell to 12-18 and 3-10.
CSU Bakersfield jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning without an RBI, scoring the runs on a wild pitch, a double steal and an error.
Cal Poly, which lost all four games at Hardt Field in 2021, its last visit to Bakersfield, responded by scoring six times in the remaining eight innings to win going away.
Ryan Fenn singled in a run and Wyatt King belted a solo home run as Cal Poly closed the gap to 3-2 in the second inning. After leaving the bases loaded in the third, the Mustangs took the lead with three runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Jake Steels and Ryan Stafford plus a wild pitch.
Cal Poly pulled away with two runs in the fifth, eighth and ninth frames plus a single run in the sixth.
Villegas and Casillas hit back-to-back doubles for a run in the fifth and Steels drew a bases-loaded walk for a 7-4 Mustang lead. The first of two sacrifice flies by Fenn made it 8-4 in the sixth.
A throwing error and a wild pitch produced the two runs in the eighth and Cal Poly capped the scoring in the ninth on back-to-back doubles by Joe Yorke and Villegas plus Fenn's second sacrifice fly.
Junior right-hander Bryce Warrecker (3-2) tossed five innings for the win, allowing four runs (three earned) and six hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Derek True pitched three scoreless frames with five strikeouts and Carlo Lopiccolo recorded a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts.
The loss was charged to Ryan Verdugo (3-5), who gave up seven runs (six earned) and a dozen hits in 4 2/3 innings with two walks and three strikeouts.
Cal Poly notched 18 hits for the third time this season -- Missouri State and Fresno State also gave up 18 hits to the Mustangs -- as Steels, Stafford, Yorke and Fenn all had two hits each. All nine starters in the Cal Poly lineup earned at least one hit.
CSU Bakersfield's seven hits included three singles by catcher Matt Kurata.
Second game of the series will be played Saturday night at 6:05 with Cal Poly sophomore right-hander Steven Brooks (2-1, 6.10 ERA) to face CSU Bakersfield junior southpaw Matt Comnos (2-2, 3.25 ERA).
Sunday's series finale begins at 1 o'clock.
