SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After going undefeated in singles and doubles across a pair of road victories, graduate student Kim Bhunu has been named Big West Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the third time in her career.
Bhunu is the second Mustang to earn the distinction this spring, joining sophomore Peyton Dunkle, who won the award on March 22.
In a 4-2 victory at Pacific this past Friday, Bhunu helped Cal Poly secure the doubles point for the 10th time this season, grabbing a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 spot with her doubles partner Kennedy Buntrock. She also captured a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 win at the No. 1 singles spot.
The Harare, Zimbabwe native continued her strong play Saturday against Big West foe UC Davis. In doubles, Bhunu and Buntrock earned a 6-4 victory to improve to 8-5 this season. In singles, Bhunu grabbed her second consecutive win in straight sets at the No. 1 spot to clinch the dual win over the Aggies.
The two-time All-Big West First Team doubles selection owns an 8-2 record over her last 11 singles matches and is a perfect 6-0 in Big West play. She is 9-6 at the No. 1 singles spot this season.
Bhunu has received All-Big West honors in singles twice in her career, earning First Team honors in 2022 and Second Team praise in 2021.
Bhunu's recent play has helped Cal Poly win its last three matches and nine of its last 11.
The Mustangs host their final two home matches of the season this weekend. Cal Poly takes on Cal State Fullerton at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Mustang Tennis Complex and then wraps up its 2023 home schedule at 2:30 p.m. Sunday against UC Irvine. Following the dual with the Anteaters, the team will honor Bhunu, the program's only senior.
