Cal Poly Falls to Santa Clara Despite Turning a Triple Play

Santa Clara's seventh win in its last eight games against Cal Poly improved the Broncos' record to 17-11. Cal Poly fell to 10-19.
Santa Clara had runners at first and second with nobody out in the fourth inning and both were running when Efrain Manzo hit a line drive right at Cal Poly shortstop Aaron Casillas. His throw to second baseman Tate Shimao and the succeeding throw to first baseman Joe Yorke easily resulted in the second and third outs for the triple play.
Cal Poly has hit into a pair of triple plays in its Division I era, against Stanford in 2003 and Pepperdine in 2010, but this was the first that the Mustangs turned since moving to Division I in 1995.
Cal Poly was held to five hits by four Santa Clara pitchers. Cade Pilchard (3-0) earned the win by allowing just one run and one hit over three innings while Caden Wooster earned his first save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Freshman right-hander Freddy Rodriguez (0-2) suffered the loss, surrendering four runs and four hits over 1 1/3 innings.
Santa Clara jumped to a 7-2 lead in the first three innings. Manzo hit a three-run home run, his 10th of the year, in the first inning, Johnny Luetzow singled to knock in another run in the second and Robert Hipwell highlighted another three-run Bronco rally in the third with a two-run shot, his ninth of the season.
Cal Poly scored twice in the second inning on Ryan Fenn's fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly by Shimao. The Mustangs added single runs in the fifth (a grounder by Joe Yorke) and eighth (RBI single by Casillas) innings.
Casillas stretched his hitting streak to 10 games with two singles, lifting his average for the season to .301. Fenn and Collin Villegas each added a double.
Santa Clara's 11 hits included a double and two singles by Dawson Brigman, two singles by Malcolm Williams and a single and home run by Manzo.
The Broncos and Mustangs meet again April 25 at Stephen Schott Stadium.
Cal Poly returns to Big West Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at CSU Bakersfield. Game times are 6 p.m. both Friday and Saturday and 1 o'clock Sunday.
