4/1/2023 4:10:00 PM | Track and Field
PALO ALTO, Calif. — The Cal Poly distance crew posted three top-10 marks in program history across two days of competition at the prestigious Stanford Invitational.
On the first day of the meet Friday, Aidan McCarthy, Rachel Victor (pictured above) and Carissa Buchholz etched their names into the all-time lists with their performances in Palo Alto, while battling the best distance runners in the country.
In the men's 1,500, McCarthy shaved over two seconds off his personal best, running a time of 3:42.14 to move from No. 6 to No. 3 on Cal Poly's all-time list. McCarthy also owns the second-fastest 800 time in program history (1:48.0) and is the school record holder in the men's indoor mile (3:59.42).
Victor, a grad transfer from Sacramento State, skyrocketed into third on the Mustangs' top marks list in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:27.70 — an over 40-second PR. It was her first time running the event at Cal Poly.
Buchholz battled through the grueling 10,000-meter Friday night under the lights at the Cobb Track & Angell Field and jumped to No. 7 all-time in the event with a time of 34:37.38, surpassing Sierra Brill (2021) and dropping over three minutes off her lifetime best.
Nina St. John (3000 steeplechase) and Carson Smith (1,500) also recorded personal bests in their events Friday.
On Saturday, Spencer Pickren ran a lifetime best in the men's 800 (1:52.93), while Quinton Alexander also posted a solid time in the event (1:52.60). Misty Diaz recorded an outdoor season best in the women's 800 (2:09.96).
Cal Poly will take a brief break before splitting the team between a trio of meets, sending athletes to the Mt. SAC Relays (Apr. 12-15), Bryan Clay Invitational (Apr. 13-15) and Beach Invitational (Apr. 14-15).
