SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly, which hit .336 in a season-opening series win over Missouri State more than two weeks ago, was held to six hits or less for the fourth straight game Tuesday night.
Four Xavier pitchers combined on a five-hitter and left fielder Andrew Walker drove in three runs with three singles and stole three bases as the visiting Musketeers continued their Spring Break visit to California with a 7-1 victory over the Mustangs on Tuesday night inside Baggett Stadium.
Luke Hoskins (1-0) allowed one run and four hits over six innings for the win. Entering the game with eight strikeouts in his previous four appearances on the mound this season, Hoskins struck out seven Mustangs and walked two.
Kaden Sheedy (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up two runs (one earned) and three hits over five innings with two walks and five strikeouts.
Both teams scored a run in the first inning. Xavier scored on a Mustang throwing error and Cal Poly answered with a double by Ryan Stafford, a wild pitch by Hoskins and a sacrifice fly by Collin Villegas.
The Mustangs, however, were held scoreless on three hits the rest of the way while the Musketeers scored single runs in the fourth and seventh framews and two more in the sixth and eighth.
Shortstop Jack Housinger snapped the 1-1 tie in the fourth with a home run down the right-field line.
Cal Poly's five hits included two singles by designated hitter Kemet Brown and Stafford's double. Center fielder Garrett Schultz and third baseman Grant Stephenson each had two hits for Xavier.
Xavier and Cal Poly met for the first time in a baseball game. The Musketeers, who lost two of three games at UC Santa Barbara last weekend and play four more games at Saint Mary's this weekend, improved to 6-7 while Cal Poly fell to 3-8 with its seventh loss in eight games.
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs continue their 15-game home stand this weekend with a three-game series against UNLV. First pitches are set for 6 p.m. Friday, 4 o'clock Saturday and 10 a.m. Sunday.
