SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After soaring to a pair of personal bests, freshman Tibyasa Matovu has been named Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career.
This is the second straight week a Mustang has garnered Big West Men's Field Athlete of the Week praise. Junior Zack Volpe won the award on March 21 for the first time in his career after capturing first in the pole vault at the Bulldog Classic.
During the first day of the Conover Classic on Friday, Matovu recorded a personal best of 24 feet, 0.25 inches to win the men's long jump. The mark is currently the best in the Big West and ranks 27th in the West Region.
The Helix Charter High grad turned around the following day and shined in the men's triple jump, posting a personal best of 46 feet, 5.25 inches to place third. The mark currently ranks sixth in the conference.
Matovu has impressed in his first few meets as a Mustang. He opened the outdoor season by winning the long jump at the Cal Poly Open on March 3 and running a PR in the 100-meter dash of 10.99 seconds.
The San Diego native is the third Cal Poly athlete to receive Big West weekly praise this season.
Matovu and most of the team will head to the West Coast Relays hosted by Fresno State on Thursday and Friday. Cal Poly's top distance runners are set to compete in the Stanford Invitational and Mike Fanelli Track Classic hosted by San Francisco State on Friday and Saturday.
