4 Hits, 6 RBIs by Yorke Power Cal Poly to Victory over Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. -- First baseman Joe Yorke drove in six runs with two home runs and a pair of doubles while Steven Brooks retired all seven batters he faced as Cal Poly defeated Fresno State 15-5 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday afternoon on Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Yorke produced RBI doubles in the first and fourth innings, hit a solo home run in the second frame and capped Cal Poly's scoring with a three-run blast in the ninth.
Yorke, who entered the game with one double and one home run all year, lifted his average 34 points to .300 with his 4-for-6 performance, his first four-hit game of the season. He compiled a pair of five-hit games in a six-day span a year ago.
Brooks (1-1) came into the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth inning, Cal Poly leading 11-5, and notched the first of his three strikeouts to end the threat. He earned the victory with 2 1/3 scoreless hitless frames.
With four victories in its last five games, Cal Poly improved to 7-14 for the season. Fresno State fell to 13-10.
Cal Poly's 15 runs and 18 hits are season highs. The Mustangs also defeated Missouri State 15-5 in the season opener for both squads, collecting 13 hits.
In addition to Yorke's four hits, shortstop Aaron Casillas and third baseman Tate Shimao each added two singles and a double for two RBIs. Left fielder Ryan Stafford and second baseman Kemet Brown both singled twice.
The Mustangs scored six times in the first inning and never looked back, though Fresno State closed the gap to 8-5 in the fifth before Cal Poly pulled away with three runs in the sixth and four more in the ninth.
After Yorke and Casillas hit RBI doubles for a 2-0 lead, designated hitter Evan Cloyd belted a three-run home run to left field to highlight Cal Poly's opening-frame uprising.
Cal Poly added single runs in the second (solo home run by Yorke) and fourth (Yorke RBI double) for an 8-2 lead. After Fresno State cut the Mustang lead to 8-5, Cal Poly tallied three runs in the sixth on a one-run single by Casillas and a two-run single by Shimao.
In the ninth, Taison Corio hit a line drive solo homer to right and Yorke added his three-run shot, also to right, to complete the scoring.
Tanner Sagouspe struck out two Bulldogs in the bottom of the ninth.
In his first collegiate start, Freddy Rodriguez finished one out shy of becoming eligible for the victory. Four of the five runs he allowed were unearned and the freshman right-hander struck out three, scattering six hits.
Cal Poly resumes Big West Conference play Friday through Sunday at Long Beach State.
