LONG BEACH, Calif. -- A six-run third-inning Long Beach State rally highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Jack Hammond powered the Dirtbags to a 10-2 victory over Cal Poly in the opener of a Big West Conference baseball series Friday night at Blair Field.
Hammond went on to have a 5-for-5 night at the plate with a single, two doubles, a pair of home runs and six RBIs as Long Beach State won its sixth straight game and improved to 16-8 for the season and 4-3 in Big West games.
Cal Poly, held scoreless until the eighth frame, fell to 7-15 and 3-4.
Mustang starter Bryce Warrecker (1-2) gave up seven runs and 12 hits over 2 2/3 innings in absorbing the loss. Evan Tomlinson, Charlie Royle and Carlo Lopiccolo also pitched for Cal Poly. Royle is a freshman from Long Beach Wilson, just across the street from Blair Field.
Graham Osman (4-0) tossed six scoreless innings for Long Beach State, scattering six hits with one walk and nine strikeouts, seven of them looking. Dalton Ponce struck out four for a three-inning save, allowing the two Cal Poly runs in the eighth.
Ryan Stafford and Joe Yorke opened the eighth with singles and Collin Villegas doubled to right-center field to score Stafford. Yorke came home on a groundout off the bat of Aaron Casillas.
Cal Poly's nine hits included three singles by Stafford and two by Yorke.
Shortstop Nick Marinconz singled four times and knocked in one run for the Dirtbags. Marinconz played at Cal Poly for three seasons before entering the Transfer Portal last summer.
Cal Poly wasted a pair of early scoring opportunities -- runners at second and third with one out in the second inning and the bases full of Mustangs with no outs in the third.
Second game of the series will be played Saturday night at 6 with Cal Poly graduate southpaw Travis Weston (2-3, 6.96 ERA) to face Long Beach State senior right-hander Nick Zeglin (3-2, 3.18 ERA).
Sunday's series finale begins at 1 o'clock.
