LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Jonathon Long's second walk-off home run in five days, a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifted Long Beach State to a 5-4 victory over Cal Poly in a Big West Conference baseball game Saturday night at Blair Field.
Long, who also homered in the ninth inning of a 3-2 win over California Baptist on Tuesday, hit his second home run of the game with two outs and the bases empty, giving him six on the year.
Cal Poly, which scored the first run of the game in the fifth inning, erased 3-1 and 4-3 deficits, tying the game at 3-3 with two runs in the eighth and at 4-4 with another run in the ninth.
With its seventh straight win, Long Beach State clinched the series -- the Dirtbags won Friday's game 10-2 -- and improved to 17-8 overall and 5-3 in the Big West. Cal Poly fell to 7-16 and 3-5.
Three times in Saturday's game, Cal Poly scored in the top of an inning, only to surrender at least one run in the bottom of the same frame.
A double by Ryan Fenn in the fifth inning gave Cal Poly a 1-0 lead, but Long Beach State answered with RBI hits from Eddie Saldivar (double) and Long (single) for a 2-1 advantage.
The Dirtbags stretched their lead to 3-1 on Long's first home run of the game with two outs in the seventh.
Cal Poly tied the game in the eighth on an RBI single off the bat of Jake Steels and a sacrifrice fly by Joe Yorke. The Dirtbags quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth on a leadoff home run by Connor Burns, his fifth of the year.
In the Mustang ninth, Cal Poly loaded the bases with one out on two walks and Fenn's third hit of the game. Tyson Corio's sacrifice fly to left tied the game at 4-4.
Mustang closer Kyle Scott secured the first two outs in the bottom of the ninth on a grounder to first base and a strikeout before surrendering the game-winning hit, Long's home run to left-center field.
In addition to Fenn's three hits, Collin Villegas added a double for Cal Poly. Long Beach State's nine hits included three by Long and two each by Saldivar and Nick Marinconz.
Graduate southpaw Travis Weston was scratched from his seventh start of the season due to soreness in his right forearm. Steven Brooks allowed two runs and four hits over 4 1/3 innings with four strikeouts while Derek True also gave up two runs and four hits with two strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings. Scott (0-2) suffered the loss.
The win went to Nathen Morris (2-0), who was summoned from the bullpen to get the final two outs of the ninth inning. Dirtbag starter Nico Zeglin allowed one run and three hits over seven innings with one walk and nine strikeouts in the no-decision.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 o'clock with Cal Poly junior right-hander Kaden Sheedy (0-1, 3.92 ERA) to face Long Beach State freshman southpaw Myles Patton (2-2, 4.79 ERA).
