4/2/2023 5:38:00 PM | Baseball
The Dirtbags' second walk-off win in as many games was their eighth consecutive victory, improving their overall mark to 18-8 and conference record to 6-3.
Cal Poly fell to 7-17 and 3-6. The Mustangs are 1-6 in one-run games and 1-8 when scoring first.
Cal Poly scored in the top of the 10th on a two-out RBI single by Joe Yorke for an 8-7 lead, but Long Beach State, which won Saturday's game 5-4 on a walk-off home run by Jonathon Long, tied the game at 8-8 on a two-out home run by Tyler White, a .136 hitter, then loaded the bases with a single and two walks before Saldivar's first-pitch single knocked in the winning run.
Cal Poly scored the first two runs of the game in the second inning on RBI hits off the bats of Tate Shimao (double) and Evan Cloyd (single) before Long Beach State scored six times on six hits, sending 11 batters to the plate in the third inning.
Cal Poly chipped away, scoring twice in the fourth on RBI singles by Cloyd and Jake Steels, once in the fifth as Wyatt King was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and twice more in the sixth on a groundout by Yorke and a double by Collin Villegas, tying the game at 7-7.
Neither team scored in the final 3 1/2 innings of regulation.
Cloyd produced his first three-hit game as a Mustang, driving in two runs, and Ryan Fenn notched his second three-hit game of the series. Yorke and Aaron Casillas each had two hits as Cal Poly outhit the Dirtbags 14-12.
Four Long Beach State hitters had a pair of hits, Long hitting his third home run of the series.
Cal Poly stranded 11 runners on the basepaths, including leaving the bases loaded with nobody out in the fifth.
Tanner Sagouspe (0-2) suffered the loss, giving up the tying and winning runs in the 10th. Ryan Baum pitched 6 1/3 innings in relief of starter Kaden Sheedy, allowing one run and four hits with two walks and four strikeouts, throwing 77 pitches.
The win went to Grant Cherry, a transfer from Tennessee who secured the final out in the top of the 10th inning. Grant was the eighth pitcher of the game for Long Beach State.
Cal Poly will play its next five games at home, beginning with Pepperdine on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and continuing with a three-game Big West series against UC Riverside on Thursday through Saturday.
