SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- With an incoming weather front in the forecast, Cal Poly's baseball game Tuesday at Fresno State has a new time for the first pitch.
Originally scheduled for 6:05 p.m., the game has been moved up to 12:05 p.m. on Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPN Radio (1280 AM and 101.7 FM). Links for audio and video streams as well as live stats are posted on the baseball schedule page at GoPoly.com.
Freshman right-hander Freddy Rodriguez (0-0, 5.14 ERA) will toe the rubber for Cal Poly, facing Fresno State senior righty Trevor Garcia (2-2, 3.63 ERA).
Rodriguez, a graduate of River City High School in West Sacramento, will be making his first start as a Mustang following six relief appearances, including 2 1/3 scoreless innings against UC Irvine on Saturday. Garcia is a graduate of Santa Maria High School, transferred to Fresno State from Hancock College prior to the 2022 season and will be making his third start of the year and ninth appearance on the mound.
Garcia started against Cal Poly in the meeting at Baggett Stadium in February 2022, allowing one run and three hits in two innings. He was not involved in the decision, a game won by the Mustangs 8-4.
Garcia also was the starter in the return matchup at Fresno in early May, earning the victory with three scoreless innings. The Bulldogs scored the first four runs of the game en route to the 5-3 triumph.
Garcia earned 14 wins and compiled a 2.79 ERA in three Hancock seasons, also hitting .309 when not pitching, and led the Saints to the CIF-Southern Section Division 6 title in 2017 as a junior.
Cal Poly and Fresno State are meeting for the 187th time Tuesday. Cal Poly's 8-4 win in last year's first meeting between the two clubs featured a two-run home run by Matthias Haas and a three-run double by Brooks Lee as the Mustangs snapped a six-game losing streak against the Bulldogs that stretched back to 2016. Lee hit a solo home run in the rematch.
Fresno State owns a 119-67 advantage in the series.
In 2005 Cal Poly swept Fresno State in a three-game series for the first time in the then-60-year history of the rivalry and duplicated the feat opening the 2006 campaign in Baggett Stadium and again in 2007 at Beiden Field.
The Mustangs have won 23 of their last 34 games against the Bulldogs, including three of five games during Fresno State's national championship season in 2008.
Cal Poly head coach Larry Lee is 25-13 against Fresno State.
The Bulldogs have a new head coach this spring as Ryan Overland succeeded 20-year Bulldog mentor Mike Batesole. Batesole, who was head coach at CSUN for seven seasons prior to taking over the Fresno State program in 2003, retired last December with an 895-659-2 overall record, including a 639-501-1 mark with the Bulldogs. He was 22-30 against Cal Poly, including a 9-5 record while he was at CSUN.
Overland was an assistant coach under Batesole for 10 seasons before he was named interim head coach on Dec. 30, 2022. A catcher on the Bulldogs' 2008 national championship team, Overland played in 186 games, compiled a career .273 batting average with 11 doubles, seven home runs and 54 RBIs, and was a part of three Western Athletic Conference championships before earning his bachelor's degree in communication studies in 2008.
Overland was a graduate assistant coach at South Dakota State (2009-10), earning his master's degree in health, physical education and recreation in 2010. He then served as Fresno State's baseball intern for the 2011 season and volunteer assistant coach in 2012. Overland was named a full-time assistant coach at Nevada in the fall of 2012 before he was hired by Fresno State prior to the 2013 season.
Overland is a 2004 graduate of Atascadero High School, where he played baseball and basketball. He was a pitcher and catcher with the Greyhounds, earning three team MVP awards and first-team All-Los Padres League and All-San Luis Obispo County honors in both 2003 and 2004. Overland's father, Dale Overland, was head baseball coach at San Luis Obispo High School for seven seasons (1989-95), leading the Tigers to the 1990 CIF-Southern Section 4-A Division championship.
Fresno State, 13-9 so far this season, is coming off a 27-28 campaign, finishing tied for fourth place in the Mountain West and failing to qualify for the conference tournament.
The Bulldogs, who claimed the 2008 national championship, have made 34 NCAA tournament appearances, including four in the College World Series. The 2019 Mountain West regular season title and tournament championship was Fresno State's 36th conference championship.
Fresno State is hitting .249 as a team, led by first baseman Jaden Sheppard with a .333 average, followed by left fielder Bobby Blandford at .309. The Bulldogs are coming off a three-game Mountain West Conference sweep against UNLV in Las Vegas.
Cal Poly is 6-14 overall but has won three of its last four games, including a two-games-to-one series win over UC Irvine over the weekend in Baggett Stadium. The Mustangs are 3-3 in Big West games.
Left fielder Collin Villegas was 5-for-11 with three RBIs in the series, lifting his average to .284. Center fielder Jake Steels leads the Mustangs with a .346 mark which included a grand slam in Saturday's 9-7 loss. Ryan Stafford, who belted a grand slam to snap a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning of Sunday's 7-3 win, is hitting .272.
Cal Poly, which wrapped up a 14-game home stand with the UC Irvine series, will play a Big West series Friday through Sunday at Long Beach State.
