Truax Advances to 2nd Round; Four Other Mustangs Fall at NCAAs

TULSA, Okla. -- Bernie Truax and Dom Demas each earned victories in the opening session of the 2023 NCAA Division I National Wrestling Championships on Thursday at the BOK Center.

In a pigtail match to reduce the field from 33 wrestlers to 32 in each of the 10 weight classes, Demas earned a technical fall against Isaiah Delgado of Utah Valley at 149 pounds.

Demas was paired against top-seeded and three-time national champion Yianni Diakomihalis of Cornell in the first round, falling in a 6-1 decision.

Truax, seeded No. 2 at 197 pounds, scored an 8-0 major decision against Austin Cooley of West Virginia in a first-round bout. Now 14-1 on the year, Truax meets Luke Serber (22-8) of Oklahoma State in the second round Thursday night.

Cal Poly's other national qualifiers all lost in the first round.

At 125, Antonio Lorenzo was decisioned by third-seeded Liam Cronin of Nebraska 9-4 while at 133, Ethan Rotondo dropped a 12-6 decision to another third-seeded wrestler, Vito Arujau of Cornell.

Trevor Tinker was pinned by No. 2 seed Wyatt Hendrickson of Air Force in 1 minute, 54 seconds, in the 285-pound bracket.

All four Mustangs in the wrestlebacks will wrestle again Thursday night. They need to win four consecutive matches to earn All-America honors.
