LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Former Mustang wrestler and current Cal Poly assistant coach Evan Wick captured the senior men’s freestyle 79-kilogram title at the 2025 U.S. Open Championships on Saturday in Las Vegas.
With the victory, the four-time All-American secured a spot in the Final X which will determine the wrestlers on the 2025 U.S. World Team. The top two U.S. athletes in each weight class will wrestle a best-of-three series at Final X in Newark, New Jersey, on June 14 to determine the U.S. representative at the 2025 Senior World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia.
Wick was one of 20 wrestlers in the senior freestyle division to win a title at the U.S. Open to advance to the Final X event.

Wick tore through the 79-kilogram bracket at the U.S. Open as the top seed, posting a perfect 5-0 record. As a member of the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club under the guidance of RTC Coach John Azevedo, Wick won his first two matches by a decisive 10-0 technical fall before reeling off three straight wins by decision en route to the title. He defeated No. 2 seed Dean Hamiti Jr. — who won the NCAA title at 174 pounds a month ago — in the championship match by a 9-1 decision.
Wick spent one season on the Mustang wrestling team in 2021-22, transferring to Cal Poly after spending four years at Wisconsin, where he was a three-time All-American at 165 pounds. In his lone season with the Mustangs, Wick went 23-1, won a title at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and placed third at 165 pounds at the 2022 NCAA Championships to earn All-American honors. Wick finished with a 133-22 overall record during his collegiate career.
Wick is a two-time U.S. Olympic Team Trials qualifier and his younger brother, Luka, is currently on the Cal Poly wrestling team.
