SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly beach volleyball is back on the road this week as the Mustangs head to Tucson, Ariz. for four matches against Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Arizona Christian University, Southern Mississippi, and No. 17 Arizona.
The Mustangs (2-12) will face the Islanders of Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Arizona Christian Friday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. They will then face Southern Mississippi and No. 17 Arizona Saturday at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The Islanders of Texas A&M Corpus Christi are 9-4 this season and have won seven straight matches. Last weekend, they went 4-0 which included wins over Boise State and San Jose State. Cal Poly is 1-0 all-time against the Islanders, beating them 5-0 in 2019.
Arizona Christian, an NAIA school out of Glendale, is 7-5 so far this season. This will be their first matches of the year against Division I opponents.
Southern Mississippi heads into the week with an 8-5 record. However, they are 2-4 over the last six matches. Cal Poly is 2-0 all-time against the Golden Eagles, beating them each of the last two seasons.
At 7-2 so far this year, Arizona has climbed up to No. 17 in the latest AVCA rankings. They have a win earlier this year against Pepperdine, ranked No. 17 at the time. The Wildcats' No. 3 and No. 4 pairings have a combined record of 16-2 this season. The Mustangs are 5-3 all-time against them and have won three straight duals.
Cal Poly's team full of newcomers and new faces to the lineup has played one of the toughest schedules in the country thus far. 11 of the Mustangs' first 14 matches so far this season have been against teams ranked inside the AVCA Top 20.
Many players, new and returning, have been vying for spots in the lineup. There have already been 18 different pairs in the lineup this year. That is partially due to the Mustangs losing their entire pairings at the No. 1 spot, No. 3 spot, and No. 5 spot.
Cal Poly's best pair by record so far this year has been that of senior Jayelin Lombard and junior Piper Naess. Despite not playing together at all last year, the most experienced duo on the team has posted a team-leading 5-5 record so far at primarily the No. 2 spot.
Following their matches this weekend, the Mustangs will be back home at Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex each of the next two weekends. Cal Poly will host all the teams in the Big West March 25-26 for the Bigger West Invitational. They will then host UC Davis, Tulane, Washington, and Cal April 1-2.
