SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Ivan Brethowr hit two home runs and drove in five runs while Christian Kirtley and Corey Nunez each went 4-for-5 at the plate as No. 12 UC Santa Barbara defeated Cal Poly 12-4 in the opener of a non-conference baseball doubleheader Sunday in Baggett Stadium.
The Gauchos also won the nightcap 8-4, scoring four times in the ninth inning to snap a 4-4 tie.
Cal Poly fell to 3-10 with its ninth loss in 10 games since a season-opening series win over Missouri State. UC Santa Barbara improved to 11-3 with the sweep.
In the opener, the Gauchos put together a 20-hit offensive attack.
Carter Benbrook (1-0) pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings for the win in relief of starter Matt Ager, allowing one run with three strikeouts. The loss went to Cal Poly southpaw Travis Weston (1-2) as he gave up six runs and 10 hits over four innings.
Kirtley singled three times and hit his third home run of the season for three total RBIs while Nunez added four singles for the Gauchos.
Cal Poly's seven hits included a single and double by Aaron Casillas.
UC Santa Barbara jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first four innings. Cal Poly closed the gap to 6-4 with two runs in both the fourth and fifth frames, before the Gauchos broke the game open with two in the eighth and four more in the ninth.
In the nightcap, each team put together four-run rallies -- the Mustangs in the bottom of the second and the Gauchos in the top of the third -- and the score remained deadlocked at 4-4 until the ninth.
The first two Gaucho hitters drew walks. Brethowr doubled to knock in the go-ahead run, Aaron Parker drew a bases-loaded walk and Broc Mortensen's two-run single to right-center field capped the scoring.
Cal Poly's four-run second-inning rally was highlighted by RBI singles off the bats of Tanner Sagouspe and Tate Shimao, a groundout by Kemet Brown and a Gaucho throwing error.
Mortensen's three-run home run in the third, followed Parker's RBI single and tied the game at 4-4.
Each team had 10 hits. Mortensen finished with two hits and five RBIs and center fielder Josh Williams also had two hits. Stafford singled twice and doubled once for Cal Poly and Sagouspe and Wyatt King each added two hits.
Steven Brooks, who pitched six innings in relief and struck out six in the series finale against Oregon State last weekend, followed with 5 2/3 innings in relief versus the Gauchos, allowing one run and four hits with seven strikeouts. Kyle Scott (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing all four runs in the ninth.
After starter Reed Moring surrendered four runs and six hits in 1 2/3 innings, Gaucho relievers Jed Decooman, Nick Welch and Hudson Barrett combined for 7 1/3 scoreless innings, holding the Mustangs to four harmless hits. Barrett (1-0) struck out six over three hitless innings for the win.
