Late Home Run Lifts Cal to 2-1 Victory Over Cal Poly

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Dom Souto led off the eighth inning with a home run to spark Cal to a 2-1 victory over Cal Poly in a nonn-conference baseball game Friday afternoon at Stu Gordon Stadium.
Souto hit the round-tripper off Derek True (0-1), who suffered the loss. Chris Stamos (1-0), who pitched the eighth inning for Cal, earned the win and Christian Becerra retired the Mustangs in order in the ninth for a save.
Both teams scored an unearned run after a scoreless pitchers duel through the first 5 1/2 innings.
Cal scored first as Peyton Schulze singled following a two-base Mustang error in the sixth and Cal Poly answered with its run in the seventh on Ryan Stafford's single to left field following a throwing error on a Cal double play attempt.
Mustang starter Bryce Warrecker pitched six innings, allowing one unearned run and three hits with two walks and sis strikeouts. Cal starter Ian May tossed six scoreless frames with five hits, one walk and three strikeouts.
Stafford had two of Cal Poly's seven hits. Souto finished with two of Cal's four hits.
Cal Poly faces Connecticut (2-2) on Friday night.
