ST. GEORGE, Utah — Cal Poly swimming and diving wrapped up the 2023 MPSF Championships on Saturday with a pair of top-five marks and four top-10 individual finishes.
Head coach Phil Yoshida was proud of the way the Mustangs competed throughout the four-day meet and wanted to give a special shoutout to some of the team's top performers — Kelly McDermott, Kaia Anderson, Melia Costa, Kiersten Weiler, Drew Huston, Ryan Iannaccone (pictured above), Sean Keegan, Ryan Trichler, Brian Wong and Joshua Billotte.
"It was a fantastic last day," Yoshida said. "We moved up the scoreboard, swam fast, set some top five times and finished the meet strong. Now it's time for a short mental and physical break before hitting the weight room hard to make some serious gains before our spring long course season. Grasping onto the excitement and adrenaline rush of the past four days will be key to pushing this young team into the next echelon."
In the men's 1650-yard freestyle, Billotte took home a sixth-place finish with a time of 15:43.11.
Iannaccone earned his second top-five mark at this year's MPSF Championships, swimming the men's 100 free in 44.26 seconds to move up to No. 3 all-time in the event and place 12th overall. In the 200 fly, Wong grabbed seventh, Trichler took ninth and freshman Mac Follmer 15th.
McDermott secured 10th in the women's 200 backstroke with a time of 2:01.34, fourth-fastest in school history.
Keegan placed 12th and freshman Lucas Meneghetti 15th in the men's 200 back, while freshman Nick Elliott grabbed 14th in the 1650 free. Sophomore Taylor Lyon was 13th in the women's 200 fly.
No divers competed for Cal Poly on the final day of the meet.
As a team, the Cal Poly men finished seventh out of eight teams, while the women captured ninth out of 10 teams.
Across the four-day meet, the Mustangs recorded six top-five marks and broke one school record (women's 200 medley relay).
