
Cal Poly Baseball Announces 2024 Schedule Featuring 37 Home Games

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly released its 58-game 2024 schedule Thursday, which features 37 home games and contests against schools from the SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, and Pac-12.Larry Lee's Mustangs will begin the season with five home games, four against Missouri followed by a game against North Dakota State. They then head to Austin for a three-game series Feb. 23-25 against the University of Texas, the second-winningest program in college baseball history. The Longhorns made it to the Stanford Super-Regional last season, just missing making it to the College World Series.
Cal Poly will then begin a stretch of 15 straight home games to begin the month of March. During that span, Utah, Pepperdine, Ohio State, UNLV, CSUN, and UCSB will all come to Baggett Stadium.
The Mustangs will then make their way to south to face last year's Big West champion Cal State Fullerton for a three-game series to finish the month of March.
Last year's Mountain West winner San Diego State will come to San Luis Obispo for a two-game set April 2 & 3. From there, other home conference series include Cal State Bakersfield, UC Davis, and Long Beach State.
Cal Poly's bye week during the Big West schedule, May 10-12, will be filled with a non-conference series hosting Utah Tech for a four-game series which will see the Mustangs' only Saturday doubleheader of the year.
Throughout the season, the Mustangs will play eight games against teams who made the NCAA Tournament last year in Cal State Fullerton, Santa Clara, and Texas.
Cal Poly returns 21 players from last season, including four who earned All-Big West honors in 2023. Catcher Ryan Stafford, who participated this summer with the U.S. Collegiate National Team, is back after hitting .313 with seven home runs and 20 doubles last season to earn Second Team All-Big West honors. Shortstop Aaron Casillas also earned Second Team All-Big West honors in 2023 after leading the team in hits and led the Big West in assists while starting every game at shortstop. Stafford and Casillas shared the team lead in multiple-hit games with 25 as well as in multiple-RBI contests with 12.
Also back are Big West Honorable Mention recipients in third baseman Ryan Fenn and center fielder Jake Steels. Fenn was Cal Poly's leading hitter with a .344 average, producing 56 hits in 49 games including eight doubles and a triple. Steels hit 318 with 27 RBIs in 49 games, primarily as Cal Poly's leadoff hitter. His 13 steals (in 20 attempts) are the most at Cal Poly since Alex McKenna also stole 13 bases in 2017.
From a position player perspective, Cal Poly will be benefited by other returners such as Joe Yorke, who led the team with 46 RBI's, infielder Tate Shimao (.256, 17 RBIs), right fielder Wyatt King (.226, eight doubles, 14 RBIs), designated hitter Evan Cloyd (.233, four home runs, 18 RBIs, infielder Kemet Brown (.220) along with pitcher/utility player Tanner Sagouspe 1-2, 8.79 ERA, .203 average).
On the pitching side, the Mustangs bring back 10 guys from a year ago. That includes Jakob Wright, who dealt with injury but made five starts with three relief appearances, finishing 2-1 with a 6.27 ERA. Also back are Ryan Baum (4-5, 5.03 ERA), Steven Brooks, (4-2, 5.58 ERA) and Freddy Rodriguez (1-2, 7.00 ERA), among others.
One of the top programs on the west coast, Cal Poly has finished in the top four of the Big West standings in 11 of the last 12 seasons They've also had 45 guys selected in the MLB Draft since 2011.

Some of the notable home series this season include Missouri to kick off the season Feb. 16-19, Utah March 1-3, Ohio State March 8-11, rival UCSB March 22-24, San Diego State April 2-3, and Long Beach State to close the season May 23-25.
