SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Held to four hits in a 7-0 shutout a week ago at Baggett Stadium, Santa Clara exploded for 11 runs on 14 hits in the rematch, an 11-4 Bronco victory over Cal Poly on Tuesday at Stephen Schott Stadium.
Santa Clara scored nine times in the first four innings and coasted to the win, improving its overall mark to 19-28. Cal Poly, which has lost 11 of its last 15 meetings against the Broncos, fell to 27-20. The Mustangs are 6-3 in midweek games with one remaining next Tuesday at Fresno State.
Coach Larry Lee's squad missed a big opportunity to break out on top early, loading the bases with one out on two walks and a hit batter and Santa Clara starter Jackson Cook already out of the game. Brayden Dotoli came out of the bullpen, however, and posted a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.
It was a bit of an omen of what was to come for the Mustang offense as the Mustangs went on to strand 14 runners on the basepaths for the game.
Santa Clara, meanwhile, scored three times in both the first and second frames and added two more in the third and one in the fourth for a 9-2 advantage.
Cal Poly scored twice in the sixth to close the gap to 9-4 and had two more runners on base with one out, but could not generate any more runs the rest of the way.
Sophomore shortstop Nate Castellon and graduate right fielder Dylan Kordic each had two of Cal Poly's eight hits. Designated hitter Mateo Garcia doubled twice and singled once for Santa Clara and first baseman Will Anderson added a single and a three-run first-inning home run, his first of the year.
Dotoli (2-0) earned the victory while freshman right-hander Sean McGrath (3-4), who pitched five scoreless innings for the win against the Broncos one week ago, suffered the loss Tuesday, allowing six runs and six hits over 1 1/3 innings.
Catcher Ryan Tayman doubled to drive in two runs in the third inning for Cal Poly. In the sixth, Castellon singled to left for the third Mustang run and third baseman Alejandro Garza's sacrifice fly accounted for the final Cal Poly run of the game.
The Mustangs, first in the Big West with six conference games remaining, play a three-game series at Cal State Fullerton this weekend and close out the 2026 regular season with three more Big West games at home versus Long Beach State May 14-16 at Baggett Stadium.
