Mustangs Pull Off Five Set Road Victory Over Hawai’i Friday

HONOLULU – Cal Poly continued to show that they play some of their best volleyball when their backs are against the wall as the Mustangs came back from a 2-1 set deficit to beat Hawai'i 3-2 (10-25, 25-22, 15-25, 25-14, 15-12) on the road Friday night inside the Stan Sheriff Center and earn a huge victory.
Redshirt junior outside hitter Tommi Stockham led the Mustangs (16-10, 10-4 BW) with 17 kills, hitting .256, in addition to six digs and three aces. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Lizzy Markovska was solid on the outside as well, finishing with 12 kills, eight digs and three blocks. Junior libero Jolei Akima, a Hawai'i native, had a big night of defense in the back row, collecting a match-high 23 digs. Redshirt sophomore setter Emme Bullis directed the offense, dishing out 35 assists to go along with nine digs and three aces. Hawai'i got out to a 16-6 lead in the first set. The Rainbow Wahine extended their lead from there and went on to take the first set 25-10. Tied at 7-7 in the second set, Cal Poly scored four straight to force a Hawai'i timeout. A 6-2 run by the Rainbow Wahine tied it at 13 apiece before Cal Poly answered back with a 6-1 run to take a 19-14 lead. Hawai'i came back from down 21-15 to get back within one at 23-22. The Mustangs put the hammer down with back-to-back points to win the second set 25-23. With Hawai'i leading 10-8 in the third, the Rainbow Wahine scored three straight to go up by five. With the Rainbow Wahine ahead 14-11, Hawai'i went on a 7-2 run to up its lead to 21-13 before going on to take the set 25-15. Cal Poly came out hot to begin the fourth, getting out to a 7-1 lead. The Mustangs continued to put their foot on the gas, taking an 18-9 lead and cruised to a 25-14 win after finishing the set on a 6-1 run and forcing a fifth set. Tied 4-4 in the fifth, Cal Poly took its game to another level, scoring five unanswered points to go up 9-4. With the Mustangs leading 11-7, Hawai'i went on a 5-1 run to tie things up at 12. From there, the Mustangs scored three in a row – a Stockham kill, a Bullis ace, and a Hawai'i attack error, to finish off the victory 15-12. Friday's win was a big one in Cal Poly's hopes of getting one of the top two seeds for the Big West Championships in three weeks. The Mustangs are now just two games behind second-place Long Beach State and three behind first-place UCSB. The Mustangs will play their final four matches of the regular season at home, starting next week when hosting UC San Diego Friday and Long Beach State Saturday. Both matches start at 7 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center. The win marked the first time Cal Poly has defeated Hawai'i on the road since 2017. It was also their 10th five set match of the season as they improved their record in those matches to 8-2 this year.
