Stockham, Markovska Lead Cal Poly to Victory Over UC San Diego Friday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Behind both Tommi Stockham and Lizzy Markovska recording 20-plus kills, a double-double from setter Emme Bullis, and double digit kills from Annabelle Thalken, the Cal Poly volleyball team earned a 3-1 (25-20, 25-22, 25-27, 25-21) home victory over UC San Diego Friday night inside Mott Athletics Center.
Stockham finished with a match-high 23 kills in addition to nine digs and four aces. Markovska was right behind her with a career-high 20 kills, hitting a season-best .425, to go along with 11 digs for her 10th double-double of the season. Bullis recorded her fifth double-double of the season after dishing out 44 assists and picking up 16 digs.
Defensively, redshirt junior libero Jolei Akima led the team in digs with 19 on the night. Thalken led the Mustangs (17-10, 11-4 BW) with six blocks in addition to finishing with 11 kills as Cal Poly held the Tritons 16-10, 8-6 BW) to a .185 hitting percentage while hitting 16 more kills than them.
The Mustangs got out to a 10-5 lead in the first set before UC San Diego got back within one at 12-11. After Cal Poly took a four-point lead at 20-16, the Tritons scored three straight to once again get back within one. Later with the Mustangs leading 22-20, Cal Poly rattled off three consecutive points to win it 25-20.
The second set was back-and-forth entire time with 16 ties throughout it. Tied at 19, Cal Poly scored three straight before UC San Diego went on a 3-1 run to cut it to one at 23-22. From there, a Stockham kill followed by a Stockham and Kate Slack kill won the set for the Mustangs 25-23.
In the third set, Cal Poly led it 24-19 before the Tritons scored five unanswered points to tie it. Tied at 25, UC San Diego scored two in a row to win it 27-25 and avoid the sweep.
With the Mustangs leading 9-8 in the fourth, UC San Diego scored six in a row to take a 14-9 lead. Cal Poly responded with a 7-1 run to take the lead back at 19-16. Up 23-21, Stockham recorded a kill followed by an ace to clinch the match for the Mustangs 25-21.
Cal Poly will now host Long Beach State, who sits in second place Long Beach State at one match ahead of the Mustangs at12-3, on Saturday at 7 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center.
