Mott Magic: Mustangs Rally to Take Down Long Beach State at Home Saturday
11/11/2023 11:49:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Mott Magic struck again Saturday night for Cal Poly volleyball as the Mustangs rallied after dropping the first set to come back and win the next three to defeat Long Beach State at home 3-1 (15-25, 27-25, 27-25, 27-25) and move into a three-way tie for second place in the Big West standings.Tommi Stockham led the Mustangs (18-10, 12-4 BW) offensively with 17 kills. Redshirt freshman middle blocker Tess Masingale matched her career-high with nine kills in addition to five blocks and four digs. Annabelle Thalken and Kate Slack each added eight kills and three blocks apiece. Redshirt junior libero Jolei Akima led the way in digs with 19 for Cal Poly, who now still has a chance to earn the second seed in the Big West Championship in two weeks and receive a first-round bye.
It was a tough start for the Mustangs as they saw the Beach (18-8, 12-4 BW) score the first 10 points of the opening set. Long Beach State went on to win the first set 25-15.
Cal Poly regrouped in the second set, getting out to a 6-2 lead to start. Long Beach State came back to tie it and the two teams went back-and-forth from there until, tied at 25, Stockham put down consecutive kills to win the set for the Mustangs 27-25.
It was a similar story in the third set as neither team held a lead of more than three the entire set. Tied at 25, it was once again Stockham coming through with back-to-back kills for Cal Poly to seal the set 27-25.
In the fourth, Cal Poly took a 12-8 lead before Long Beach State came back with a 10-2 run to take an 18-14 lead. The Mustangs responded with a 5-1 run to get it back tied at 19 apiece. With the Beach leading 22-21, LBSU recorded consecutive points and look poised to force a fifth set up 24-21.
However, the Mustangs had other ideas as they rallied with three straight points to tie it at 24. After Long Beach State scored to take a 25-24 lead, a Masingale kill followed by a London Haberfield ace and a Long Beach State attack error clinched the 27-25 set and match for the Mustangs.
With two regular season matches remaining, the Mustangs are tied with both Long Beach State and Hawai'i for second place in the Big West standings at 12-4. Cal Poly's final two matches next week are both at home starting with UC Riverside on Friday at 7 p.m. followed by the regular season finale against UC Davis Saturday at 8 p.m.
