Mustangs Sweep UC Riverside at Home Friday on ‘Jolei Akima’ Night

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Emma Fredrick had a career-high 11 kills as Cal Poly earned a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-14) sweep victory over UC Riverside Friday night inside Mott Athletics Center.
It was senior night for the Mustangs (19-10, 13-4 BW), who honored the lone senior Jolei Akima before the match. Akima finished the match with a match leading 15 digs.
Fredrick had just two errors as she hit .333 for the match. Three other Mustangs also finished with at least five kills. Redshirt junior outside hitter Tommi Stockham had seven kills, redshirt freshman middle blocker Tess Masingale had six kills, and junior middle blocker Kate Slack added five kills.
Cal Poly hit .321 for the match while limiting the Highlanders (6-23, 5-12 BW) to a .021 hitting percentage. The Mustangs also had more digs, blocks, assists and aces than UC Riverside.
Tied 4-4 in the first set, Cal Poly went on a 7-1 run to take an 11-5 lead. UC Riverside eventually got back within three at 14-11 before the Mustangs ran away with it after a 7-1 run gave them a 21-13 lead and went on to win it 25-14.
Tied at 8 apiece in the second set, Cal Poly pulled away after going on an 8-1 run to go up 16-9. Cal Poly went on to take the set 25-17.
The Mustangs blitzed out to an 13-4 lead to begin the third set. UC Riverside got within four at 16-12 before the Mustangs finished the set on a 9-2 run to win it 25-14 and complete the sweep.
Cal Poly will host UC Davis in the regular season finale Saturday at 8 p.m. inside Mott Athletics Center.
