Mustangs Beat UC Davis 3-2 in Home Finale; Earn No. 3 Seed in Big West Championship

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The cardiac Mustangs struck again Saturday night, beating UC Davis in the home finale 3-2 (22-25, 25-18, 28-26, 20-25, 15-13) and earning the No. 3 seed in next week's Big West Championship in Long Beach and set up a rematch with UC Davis in the first round.Emma Fredrick was outstanding, collecting a career-high 17 kills with just three errors to hit .350. Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Annabelle Thalken finished with 13 kills and four blocks while redshirt junior outside hitter Tommi Stockham added 12 kills and seven digs.
Defensively, libero Jolei Akima and defensive specialist Ella Scott were fantastic in the back row. Akima finished with a career-high 27 digs while Scott had a career-high 13.
Tied 22-22 in the first set, the Aggies (15-15, 8-10 BW) scored three straight to steal the first set 25-22.
Cal Poly answered back strong in the second, getting out to a 9-3 lead. After UC Davis got it to 12-11, the Mustangs went on an 11-2 run to pull away and eventually win the set 25-18.
It was a tight back-and-forth third set. With the Mustangs leading 20-18, UC Davis rattled off four straight points to take a 22-20 lead. Cal Poly came back to tie it a 23 apiece before teams traded the next few points. Tied at 26, a UC Davis service error followed by a Stockham kill won the set for the Mustangs.
With UC Davis leading 20-19 in the fourth set, the Aggies scored three straight to go up by four. Cal Poly scored to make it 23-20 before UC Davis scored the next two points to win the set 25-20 and force a deciding fifth set.
The Mustangs got out to a 5-2 lead to begin the fifth before the Aggies got back within one at 6-5. Cal Poly then scored three straight to go up by four at 9-5. A 4-1 run by UC Davis got them back within one at 10-9. After the Aggies tied it at 13, a UC Davis service error followed by an Aggie attack error finished off the victory for the Mustangs, 15-13.
As the No. 3 seed in next week's Big West Championship, Cal Poly will face these Aggies again on Wednesday in the first round as they earned the No. 6 seed. The match will start at 7 p.m. inside the Walter Pyramid on the campus of Long Beach State. The winner will move on to face No. 2 seed Hawai'i in the semifinals on Friday at 7 p.m.
It was a balanced attack for the Mustangs (20-10, 14-4 BW), who played their 11th five set match of the season and moved to 9-2 in those matches, as three players finished with double digit kills. Freshman outside hitter
