SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly cross country program looks to defend its conference titles when the Mustangs host the Big West Championships on Friday at Blacklake Golf Resort in Nipomo, Calif.
Action starts at 8:30 a.m. with the men's 8K, followed by the women's 6K at 9:15 a.m. There is no livestream, but you can follow the live results here and a recap of the meet will air on ESPN+ starting at 3 p.m. Tickets to the conference meet can be purchased for $7 here.
The Mustangs are hoping to repeat last year's incredible showing at UC Riverside's Ag/Ops Course and sweep the men's and women's Big West titles for the second straight year and the seventh time overall.
This is the sixth time Cal Poly has hosted the Big West Championships and the first time since 2013, when the Mustangs sweep the team titles. The previous five times Cal Poly has hosted the conference meet, the men emerged victorious each time while the women won twice.
On Friday, the Mustang men are seeking their 19th Big West title, while the women are eyeing their ninth.
Cal Poly hosted a meet at the Blacklake Golf Resort for the first time on Sept. 1 and sent a statement to the rest of the conference that dethroning them this year won't be easy. The Mustangs swept the team titles at the season-opening Big West Preview as the men beat out rival UC Santa Barbara and the women rolled to a 28-point win over second-place UC Riverside. In the men's race, redshirt sophomore Spencer Pickren, redshirt senior Will Fallini-Haas and freshman Chris Caudillo (running unattached) finished first, second and third respectively. All three will be on the start line for Cal Poly during the Big West Championships.
Entering the conference meet, the Mustang men are the top ranked Big West school in the latest USTFCCCA West Region rankings, checking in at No. 7. They have captured the team title at all three meets they have competed in this season and entered the USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll for the first time in 12 years following their victory at the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Sept. 22 where they beat out the host Ducks, ranked No. 15 nationally at the time. Graduate student Davis Bove, a transfer from LSU, led the way, capturing the men's individual title at the prestigious meet. The two-time Second Team All-American in the indoor mile also placed first at the Bronco Invitational two weeks ago to earn Big West Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors for the second time this season. Bove has claimed the individual title at both meets he has raced in this fall and will look to make it three-for-three on Friday in Nipomo.
Heading into Friday's meet, the Cal Poly women are No. 9 in the USTFCCCA West Region rankings, two spots behind UC Davis, who has received votes nationally in the last two USTFCCCA national polls. The Mustangs garnered votes nationally for the first time since 2018 in the Week 2 USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll after an impressive third-place finish at the Bill Dellinger Invitational. The women capped off their regular season schedule on Oct. 14 at the XC23 Pre-Nationals hosted by Virginia by placing seventh out of 24 teams in the Blue Championship race. Redshirt junior Schuyler Gooley has been the Mustangs' top runner at their last two meets, securing 16th overall at the Bill Dellinger Invitational and 32nd at the XC23 Pre-Nationals.
The Mustangs certainly won't be lacking conference championship experience when they take the start line Friday. Four of the nine runners that led the women to their 2022 title will be in action — juniors Ellie Baxter and Carissa Buchholz, and sophomores Tatiana Cornejo and Riley Cash. The men return three All-Big West honorees — Will Fallini-Haas (second), Aidan McCarthy (third) and Anthony Guerra (sixth) — from last year's squad that rolled to a Big West title by finishing 45 points ahead of second-place UC Santa Barbara.
Following Friday's Big West Championships, the Mustangs will shift their attention to the NCAA West Regionals hosted by Sacramento State on Friday, Nov. 10, at the Haggin Oaks Golf Course.
