SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Ryan Vanhoy and Women’s Cross Country Head Coach Michelle Chewens have resigned from their positions at Cal Poly after four years to pursue other opportunities.
A national search to fill their positions will begin immediately to continue the success of the Cal Poly track and field and cross country teams.
“I am thankful to Ryan and Michelle for their contributions to our track and field and cross country programs over the last four years,” Cal Poly Director of Athletics Carter Henderson said. “Our student athletes excelled tremendously under their leadership and we appreciate their dedication to Cal Poly Athletics during their time here. We wish them and their family the absolute best on their future endeavors.”
Vanhoy and Chewens, who are married, recently wrapped up their fourth year with the Cal Poly track and field and cross country programs this spring after joining the Mustangs in June 2022 from Ole Miss. The Mustangs won their fourth consecutive Big West Championship in both men’s and women’s cross country this past fall, and in track and field won three Big West titles on the men’s side and one on the women’s side during Vanhoy and Chewens’ time on the staff. Vanhoy was named Big West Coach of the Year eight times between track and field and cross country, while Chewens earned the Big West Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year award four times.
