NIPOMO, Calif. — The Cal Poly cross country program brought out the brooms for the second straight year Friday, sweeping the men's and women's team titles at the Big West Championships held at Blacklake Golf Resort in Nipomo.
It marks the seventh time in program history the Mustangs have swept the team titles and only the second time they've done it in back-to-back years — 2012-13 being the other occasion.
Hosting the conference meet for the first time in a decade and the sixth time overall, Cal Poly made sure to show out in front of the hometown crowd, delivering yet another historic performance.
The Mustang men throttled the competition en route to their 19th Big West title, beating out second-place UC Santa Barbara by an astonishing 60 points — the second largest margin of victory in Big West Championship history and the largest since Cal Poly joined the conference in 1996. The men have now won six of the last seven conference titles.
Graduate student Davis Bove led the way, cruising to the individual title with an 8K time of 23:37.4 — just 10 seconds off the Big West meet record, which former Mustang Jake Ritter broke last year at UC Riverside's Ag/Ops Course (23.27.4). Bove, a transfer from LSU, is the ninth Cal Poly athlete to secure the Big West men's individual title. Bove has now finished first in all three meets he has competed in this season.
Junior Aidan McCarthy, a First Team All-American in the men's 800-meter this spring, was right on Bove's heels, placing second with an 8K personal-best time of 23:41.6. It's the second straight year McCarthy has grabbed All-Big West honors in cross country after taking third at last year's meet.
Redshirt junior Anthony Guerra secured All-Big West honors for the third consecutive season, snagging fifth (24:03.2). Redshirt sophomore Spencer Pickren, who won the individual title at the season-opening Big West Preview meet, earned All-Conference praise as well by finishing in the top 10, placing sixth (24:07.6) overall.
Freshman Chris Caudillo rounded out the runners that scored for the Mustangs, taking home 13th (24:27.1). Redshirt freshman Oscar Gomez (14th, 24:27.9), redshirt junior Colton Swinth (21st, 24:40.9) and redshirt sophomore Michael Chambers (34th, 25:16.4) also crossed the finish line for the men.
The Mustang men added to their perfect record when hosting the Big West meet, improving to 6-0 all-time at home.
The Cal Poly women were just as impressive, running an exceptional final kilometer of the race to overtake UC Davis and raise their ninth Big West title, and third in five meets. Trailing the Aggies by 12 points entering the last 1K, juniors Hana Catsimanes and Carissa Buchholz both moved up multiple spots to help the Mustangs soar past UC Davis and repeat as Big West champs for the fourth time in program history.
The Mustangs finished with 39 points, while the Aggies were second with 58. Four runners placed inside the top 10 individually to grab All-Big West honors. Redshirt junior Schuyler Gooley paced the Mustangs for the third straight meet, capturing fourth with a personal-best 6K time (20:34.0). It's her second time securing All-Conference praise.
Catsimanes, sophomore Tatiana Cornejo and Buchholz secured sixth (20:45.8), seventh (20:50.5) and eighth (21:02.9) respectively for Cal Poly.
Sophomore Riley Cash stepped up and brought home a strong 14th-place finish (21:29.9), and redshirt sophomore Isabel Sanchez crossed the finish line right behind her in 15th with a personal-best 6K time (21:32.7).
Freshman Sydney Sundgren was 22nd (21:49.7) in her first conference meet, junior Ellie Baxter 26th (21:53.6) and redshirt junior Kaia Hoak 61st (23:09.0) to round out the Cal Poly women that raced in Friday's meet.
This is the third time the Mustang women have won the conference title while hosting.
Next up for Cal Poly is the NCAA West Regionals hosted by Sacramento State on Friday, Nov. 10, at the Haggin Oaks Golf Course.
