SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Cal Poly cross country program had an historic day at the NCAA West Regional on Friday at the Haggin Oaks Golf Course in Sacramento.
Graduate student Davis Bove punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships by finishing eighth overall in the men's 10K race, while Anthony Guerra and sophomore Tatiana Cornejo each secured USTFCCCA All-West Region honors to help the Mustang men and women each place eighth at the meet.
This marks the third time in program the Mustangs have had at least three athletes earn USTFCCCA All-West Region honors at the West Regional meet, 2013 and 2011 being the other two occasions. All-Region praise is awarded to the top 25 finishers in each of the nine regional meets around the country.
Bove earned an individual berth to the NCAA Championships next Saturday, Nov. 18 at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Virginia, by being one of the first four finishers at the regional meet that wasn't on one of the automatic qualifying or at-large teams headed to nationals. Bove's eighth-place result is tied for the second-highest individual finish by a Mustang man at the West Regional in program history.
The Big West individual champion posted a 10K personal best of 29:18.5 — the eighth fastest time in the history of the course, which has hosted the NCAA West Regional five times.
Guerra, running in his third regional meet, had arguably the best race of his career, capturing 14th with a 10K personal best of 29:32.6. The three-time All-Big West honoree in cross country delivered an incredible performance to grab All-West Region praise, narrowly missing out on an individual berth to nationals.
Aidan McCarthy, a First Team All-American in the men's 800-meter this past spring, was the third Mustang on the men's side to cross the finish line, placing 52nd (30:23.5). Spencer Pickren took 64th (30:37.3), 2023 Big West Men's Freshman of the Year Chris Caudillo 80th (31:02.0) and Colton Swinth 88th (31:07.8) to round out the runners that competed at regionals for Cal Poly. Pickren, Caudillo and Swinth all recorded 10K personal bests in cross country at the meet.
The Cal Poly men secured eighth (215 points) as a team for the second consecutive year, their best result since placing seventh in 2013.
Cornejo's stellar day allowed the Mustang women to capture eighth (215 points) as a team as well — tied for their third highest finish in program history at the West Regional and best in five years. All seven women that competed for Cal Poly recorded 6K personal bests.
Cornejo, the 2022 Big West Women's Freshman of the Year, shined in front of her friends and family in her hometown area code as the Elk Grove, Calif. native and St. Francis Catholic High grad placed 23rd overall with a personal-best 6K time of 20:05.5 to claim All-West Region praise. She is the highest finisher for the Mustang women at West Regionals since 2018 and she improved upon her finish at last year's regional meet as a true freshman by 49 places.
Schuyler Gooley wasn't far behind Cornejo. The redshirt junior grabbed a 28th-place finish (20:16.3) in the second regional meet of her career.
Junior Hana Catsimanes, a Wake Forest, captured 41st (20:33.3) in her first West Regional meet and third overall. It marked the highest finish of her career at regionals.
Sophomore Riley Cash had a strong showing, securing 55th (20:39.8). Junior Carissa Buchholz took 68th (20:46.6), redshirt sophomore Isabel Sanchez grabbed 91st (21:02.2) and 2023 Big West Women's Freshman of the Year Sydney Sundgren placed 119th (21:30.7) to round out the runners that raced for the women.
The impressive showing for the men's and women's teams marked the end of the season for the Mustangs, who swept the Big West Championships for the second straight year and the seventh time in program history this fall.
Bove will pack his bags and travel to Virginia to compete in the 2023 NCAA Championships on Nov. 18. The men's 10K final is scheduled for 8:10 a.m. PST and the race will be televised live on ESPNU.
