CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Graduate student Davis Bove wrapped up a remarkable cross country season Saturday, placing 108th overall at the NCAA Championships at Panorama Farms in Virginia.
In his first appearance at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, Bove got out to a scorching start in the men's 10K, climbing 54 spots between the first and second kilometer and reaching as high as 55th-place. Unfortunately, the Big West Men's Athlete of the Year was unable to hold on to that position on a grueling course, finishing with a time of 30:36.7.
The race capped an incredible first season for Bove as a Mustang. The LSU transfer punched his ticket to the national meet last Friday by capturing eighth at the NCAA West Regional at Sacramento State's Haggin Oaks Golf Course — tied for the second-highest individual finish by a Mustang man at the West Regional in program history and the best since Sean Ricketts took eighth in 2003. The Franklin, Tenn. native ran a personal best 10K time of 29:32.6 at the West Regional, the eighth-fastest time in the history of the course. He also earned All-Region honors in cross country for the third time in his career.
Bove captured the individual title at three meets this fall, placing first in the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Sept. 22, the Bronco Invitational on Oct. 14 and the Big West Championships on Oct. 27. He became the 14th Big West individual champion on the men's side in program history and led the Mustangs to their second straight Big West title and 19th overall.
Saturday's race officially put a bow on the 2023 cross country season for the Mustangs. Cal Poly opens its indoor track and field season on Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener hosted by Boston University.
