SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Over 2,700 miles away from the friendly confines of the Central Coast, Davis Bove will hit the Panorama Farms Cross Country Course in Earlysville, Virginia, on Saturday morning to cap another historic season for the Cal Poly cross country program.
Bove will race in the men's 10K at the NCAA Championships at 8:10 a.m. PST Saturday. You can watch Bove compete live on ESPNU with coverage beginning at 6:30 a.m. PST ahead of the women's 6K final at 7:20 a.m.
This marks the second straight year a Mustang has competed in the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Last season, Jake Ritter capped off a remarkable career by placing 90th overall — becoming the highest individual finisher at nationals on the men's side for Cal Poly since Phillip Reid (33rd) in 2007.
The top 40 finishers in the men's and women's races at the NCAA Championships on Saturday will secure All-American honors.
Bove, the Big West Men's Athlete of the Year, punched his ticket to the NCAA Championships by capturing eighth at the NCAA West Regional this past Friday at Sacramento State's Haggin Oaks Golf Course — tied for the second-highest individual finish by a Mustang man at the West Regional in program history and the best since Sean Ricketts took eighth in 2003. The Franklin, Tenn. native ran a personal best 10K time of 29:32.6, the eighth-fastest time in the history of the course which has hosted the West Regional five times.
The eighth-place finish also marked the third time Bove has garnered All-Region praise during his career. While competing for LSU, Bove earned 17th at the 2019 South Central Regional and 25th at the 2021 South Central Regional to secure All-Region honors.
Bove, a grad student, transferred to Cal Poly over the summer after spending four years at LSU. As a Tiger, Bove earned Second Team All-American honors in the indoor mile twice, placing 12th at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Championships and 15th in 2022. He also broke LSU school records in the indoor 3,000-meter and mile, was a two-time NCAA East Preliminaries qualifier in the 1,500 (2021, 2023) and anchored the Tigers' school-record breaking indoor distance medley relay in 2023.
Prior to competing in the West Regional, Bove was undefeated in meets this season, placing first in the Bill Dellinger Invitational on Sept. 22, the Bronco Invitational on Oct. 14 and the Big West Championships on Oct. 27. Bove's performance at the conference meet allowed the Cal Poly men to capture their second straight Big West title and 19th overall. Bove won the individual title with an 8K time of 23:37.4 — just 10 seconds off the Big West meet record — as the Mustangs beat out second-place UC Santa Barbara by an astonishing 60 points, the second largest margin of victory in Big West Championship history and the largest since Cal Poly joined the conference in 1996.
