SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — After breaking a school record in Seattle this weekend, sophomore Melody Nwagwu has been named the Mechanics Bank Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.
At the UW Invitational on Saturday, Nwagwu posted a lifetime best (indoor or outdoor) of 19 feet, 3.5 inches in the women's long jump on her final attempt, shattering the previous indoor school record (19-1) set by Janet Yarbrough in 1982.
The leap allowed the Aurora, Colorado native to finish third in the event. Nwagwu also posted a strong time in the 60-meter dash (7.88 seconds), finishing 19th in prelims.
So far during this indoor season Nwagwu is the second Mustang on the women's side to shatter a school record, joining Jadyn Snaer who soared to the top of the list in the 60-meter at the Air Force Ralph Lindeman Invitational on Jan. 20.
Nwagwu captured third in the triple jump at the Big West Championships last year, earning All-Big West honors as a true freshman. The Grandview High grad also took fourth in the long jump.
Cal Poly track & field returns to action on Feb. 10-11, splitting the squad between a pair of meets — the Husky Classic and Don Kirby Elite Invitational.
