Mustangs Drop Season Opener to No. 4 Michigan Saturday

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Starting its 2023 season off against one of the top teams in the country at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, the Cal Poly men's tennis team fell on the road to No. 4 Michigan Saturday, 4-0.
The No. 4 Wolverines (5-0) took the doubles point to start the match with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, but only after strong outputs from the Mustangs. At the No. 2 spot, Cal Poly's duo of junior Noah Berry and redshirt junior Colter Smith were neck and neck with Michigan's Ondrej Styler and Patrick Maloney, but the Wolverines' tandem came out on top 6-4. Michigan clinched the doubles point after its No. 1 pairing of Gavin Young and Andrew Fenty, ranked No. 14 in the nation, beat Cal Poly's Joe Leather and Bastiaan Weststrate, 6-4.
In singles, the Wolverines, who have four players ranked inside the top 60 of the ITA national singles rankings, took a 2-0 lead after Fenty, ranked No. 6 in singles, was victorious over Smith at the No. 3 spot.
At the No. 4 spot, Gavin Young, ranked No. 20 in the country in singles, beat the Mustangs' Fernando Fonseca in straight sets to take a 3-0 lead. Michigan's Ondrej Styler, ranked No. 16 in the nation, then clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Leather at the No. 2 spot.
In the other matches that didn't finish, Weststrate held a 4-2 lead in the second set over No. 58 Bjorn Swenson at the No. 5 spot; Berry, ranked No. 55 in the nation in singles, was tied 3-3 in the second set at the No. 1 spot with Maloney; and Mustang freshman Zachary Pellouchoud was in a tight contest at the No. 6 spot with Jacob Bickersteth.
Cal Poly will stay in Ann Arbor Sunday to play Arkansas at 7 a.m. PT.
