Hot Shooting Second Half Propels UCSD over Cal Poly
1/19/2023 9:44:00 PM | Women's Basketball
LA JOLLA, Calif. – Mustang graduate guard Oumou Toure scored a season-high 20 points but a 57 percent shooting, 44-point second half by UC San Diego, saw the Mustangs fall on the road to the Tritons 70-58 Thursday.
In addition to her 20 points, Toure also pulled down six rebounds. Sophomore guard Jazzy Anousinh, playing back in her hometown, finished with 11 points on 50 percent shooting. Fellow sophomore guard Sydney Bourland added nine points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Mustangs (5-10, 2-5 BW), who are plagued by injuries and only had 10 available players.
As a team, the Tritons (8-9, 5-2 BW), who got out to a 16-4 lead in the first quarter, had three players score in double figures, led by guard Julia Macabuhay's 18 points.
Down 23-13 with 6:47 left in the second quarter, Cal Poly held the Tritons to three points the rest of the half as the Mustangs scored 14 points, eight via Toure, to take a 27-26 lead into halftime.
UCSD scored six straight points to begin the third quarter to take a five point lead before the Mustangs responded with a 7-2 run to tie it. The Tritons then went on a 12-2 run to take a 10 point, which they took into the fourth quarter.
A 9-3 run by the Mustangs to open the fourth quarter trimmed the UCSD lead down to four. With UCSD leading 62-55 with just over three minutes left, the Tritons pulled away with a 7-0 run to push its lead to 14.
Cal Poly will be back home at Mott Athletics Center Saturday to take on UC Davis at 4 p.m.
