SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Playing with just nine available players, the Cal Poly women's basketball team fell Saturday at home to UC Davis, who shot 59 percent for the game, 74-52.
Sophomore guard Annika Shah led the Mustangs (5-11, 2-6 BW), who committed a season-low eight turnovers and had a season-high 18 offensive rebounds, with 13 points and six assists. Sophomore forward Maia Garcia finished with a career-high nine points while senior guard Maddie Willett added seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Aggies (8-10, 4-4 BW), who had three players score in double figures, came out firing to begin the game, getting out to an 11-2 lead after making five of their first seven shots.
After going down nine with 6:30 left in the second quarter, Cal Poly roared back with a 10- run over four minutes to take its first lead of the game. UC Davis then answered back with an 8-1 run over the final two minutes of the half to hold a six point lead at halftime.
It was the third quarter that plagued the Mustangs as UC Davis pushed its lead up to 18 after a 9-0 run by the Aggies over the course of three minutes late in the third, a lead Cal Poly was unable to cut into.
After a week that saw the Mustangs play three games in six days, Cal Poly will play two games on the road next week, starting Thursday at Long Beach State followed by a Saturday tilt at Cal State Fullerton.
